Trust Through
Transparency
When you put technology in front of students, you should be able to verify what it does. That's why EduTab is built on open-source foundations.
Why Open Source Matters for Schools
Most education technology is a black box. Open-source software is different—the code is visible, inspectable, and auditable by anyone.
The Open Source Solution
Open-source software is visible, inspectable, and auditable. Security researchers can find vulnerabilities. Developers can verify privacy claims. Schools can understand exactly what's running on their devices.
This isn't theoretical. Open-source security through transparency is why it powers most of the internet's infrastructure—from servers running websites to encryption protecting communications.
Transparency = Verifiability = Trust
The Black Box Problem
With proprietary software, you install it and hope it works, trusting the vendor's promises. But how do you:
- ✗ Verify data isn't collected without your knowledge?
- ✗ Confirm GDPR compliance claims?
- ✗ Assess security if you can't see the code?
- ✗ Know what happens if the vendor disappears?
With proprietary software, you're relying on trust without verification.
EduTab's Open Source Foundations
EduTab is built on proven open-source technologies that have been tested and improved by global communities.
Headwind MDM
EduTab Portal is built on Headwind MDM, a mature open-source mobile device management platform. Proven technology with security transparency and continuous community improvement.
F-Droid
The EduTab App Marketplace is built on F-Droid, a trusted open-source Android app distribution platform. No Big Tech dependency, transparent build process, and security-focused app reviews.
Security Transparency
The code is publicly reviewable. Anyone can verify security claims and find vulnerabilities.
No Vendor Lock-in
The underlying technology isn't proprietary. You're never locked into a single vendor.
Continuous Improvement
We contribute back to open-source projects. Benefits are shared across the community.
Our Contributions
Open source is a two-way relationship. We don't just benefit from community work—we contribute back.
Improvements We've Made
- Education-focused features: Teacher controls and classroom management additions
- European language support: Translations for 24 EU languages
- GDPR-specific functionality: Audit logging and compliance features
- Bug fixes and patches: Contributed back to upstream projects
Our Repositories
We publish EduTab-specific modifications, integration tools, documentation, and deployment guides.

The Trust Equation
Proprietary Software Trust Model
- 1
Vendor makes promises
- 2
You hope they're true
- 3
If something goes wrong, you might never know
Open Source Trust Model
- 1
Claims are verifiable in code
- 2
Independent reviewers can check
- 3
Issues are discovered and fixed publicly
For education where student privacy is paramount, which model makes more sense?
Common Questions About Open Source
Does open source mean less secure?
The opposite is usually true. With proprietary software, only the vendor's team reviews the code. With open source, anyone with expertise can find and report issues. This "many eyes" approach catches problems faster. Major security-critical software (Linux, encryption libraries, web servers) is open source precisely because security benefits from transparency.
If the code is open, can anyone steal it?
The code is available, but running a competitive service requires more than code—it requires ongoing development, support, infrastructure, and expertise. Open source prevents lock-in, not competition.
Is open source free?
Open source refers to license, not price. EduTab offers a free self-hosted option (you run the software yourself) and paid cloud hosting (we run it for you with support). The code is free. The service is the value!
Can we modify the code ourselves?
Yes. If you have development resources, you can fork the code and modify it for your specific needs. Many organizations do this for custom requirements.
Transparency in Everything We Do
Our commitment to transparency extends beyond code.
Transparent Data Handling
We document exactly what we collect and why. No mystery, no hidden functionality.
Transparent Documentation
Documentation is public, not hidden behind customer portals.
Transparent Roadmap
Development priorities are discussed publicly. Issues and feature requests are tracked openly.
